JAM Lab Maryland
Jazz Academy of Music (JAM) LAB
2019 JAM Lab Maryland The Jazz Academy Annual Summer “JAM Lab” is a 6-day 5-night residency instrumental and vocal jazz music camp located at The National 4-H Youth Conference Center just outside of Washington, DC in Chevy Chase, MD. It is a great opportunity for young musicians’ ages 9 to 19 to learn to solo on their instrument and with their voices. The focus of the camp is on jazz improvisation. Students learn play and perform their own extemporaneously created solos. It is a fun way for musically inclined youth to spend time playing their instrument with the professionals and their peers. The camp begins on July 7, 2019 and concludes July 12, 2019.
The JAM Lab works this way!
The focus of the JAM Lab is primarily on the development of improvisational skills. During the camp students are placed into groups based upon their skill level and introduced to various improvisational styles and techniques. Students apply what they learn to develop their own improvisational style and practice and perform with the instructors and with combos comprised of their peer musicians.
In addition, master classes are conducted by faculty and touring artists. Students play and sing right along with the faculty in the Jam Sessions. The camp culminates in a concert where students perform in large ensemble and combo formats.
The camp will feature the following activities:
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Combo Sessions – Students are grouped into small combos or groups to create and perform standards as well as their self-developed repertoire of music. Students name their own combo and choose their combo selections with the assistance of one of the instructors who will serve as their “Combo Coach”. Each combo will perform their selections at the final concert.
Listening Jazz Idiom
Students are provided an overview of the history of jazz from the early 1900’s to today. Also covered will be the Blues, Spiritual and Classical influences in Jazz Music. Students view films and listen to and discuss various musical styles.
Improvisation & Music Theory – Students learn the language of jazz and techniques for creating and playing extemporaneously created melodies over chord progressions. This is referred to as improvisation. For vocalist, scatting concepts are explored.
Sectionals
Students are group by instrument/vocal and skill level to work on the technical aspects of playing and performing certain musical passages and are given tips to improve their vocal or instrumental proficiency.
Masters Class – During the course of the camp, various established recording/touring artists will be invited to work with the students and share their experiences as a recording artist.
JAM Sessions – Students JAM into the night right along with their instructors. This setting gives the students the opportunity to apply what they have learning in a free form format.
Faculty and Student Concerts – In the evening the faculty and any visiting artists perform for the students in concert.
The final evening of the camp, the students perform in concert. The concert will be held at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Cultural Arts Center, Montgomery College, 7995 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910, starting at 7:00pm. Tickets are $12.00 per person.
Private Lessons
Students can receive an optional 1/2-hour private lesson for an additional $60.00.
Private lessons are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and may be ordered on-line.
The Best Instructors

At the JAM Lab you will be a part of sessions that include some of the top professional musicians in the Washington Metropolitan area and beyond. You will gain experience playing in combo settings. You will be in a professional atmosphere with various professional musicians in addition to the primary camp instructors who are also accomplished professionals.
