Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra (MACJO)

The Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra (MACJO) is the premier performing and networking honor group for select collegiate jazz musicians in the Mid-Atlantic region. The MACJO was founded in 2009 as an initiative of the Cumberland Jazz Society. Effective August of 2016, MACJO became a division of the Jazz Academy of Music.

MACJO has performed at such notable venues as Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Kennedy Center, St. Peters Church (NYC), Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference in New Orleans, in addition to their annual April performance in Cumberland, MD.  Each year MACJO performs on the Ronnie Wells Main Stage at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Rockville, MD.  For more information on the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival please visit the website at www.midatlanticjazzfestival.org.

2020 Guest Conductor and Soloist Terell Stafford

Instrumentalist Terell Stafford has been named the guest conductor and soloist for MACJO’s performance at the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival (MAJF).   MACJO will perform on the Ronnie Wells Main Stage at the MAJF in Rockville, MD on February 14, 2020 at 7:00pm.

Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.

Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University, founder and band leader of the Terell Stafford Quintet, and Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP). Stafford is renowned in the jazz world as an educator, performer and leader and has received countless award nominations and accolades.

The Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra is the Premier Collegiate All Star Big Band Experience in the Mid-Atlantic Region.  The purpose of the group is to provide aspiring collegiate musicians the opportunity to perform and network as a member of a premier collegiate jazz orchestra while contributing to the development of jazz audiences in the DC Metropolitan area and throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Nomination Form (Instructor)

Instructors/Directors may nominate a student by completing the Nomination Form. A Student Application link will be sent to the nominee’s email address indicated on the Nomination Form.

Self-Nomination (Student Application)

Students who complete the online self-nomination application must provide up to (3) online soundcloud and/or YouTube samples and include their band director’s contact information.

Fees:

The cost for this years’ experience is $225. This cost will include: Event Registration, Meals, Student All Access Pass to the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and MACJO Member keepsakes.

Hotel Accommodations: MACJO Rehearsals and the MAJF performance will take place the Hilton Hotel and Executive Meeting Center, 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. The Jazz Academy has negotiated a greatly reduced rate of $115.00 per night plus tax. Hotel arrangements will be coordinated as part of the confirmation process once selected. Selected members have the option to choose alternative accommodations, however the accommodations at the host hotel are the most convenient and economical available in the area.
